Male Computer Users may face Erectile Dysfunction
Spending excessive time on the computer can lead to erectile dysfunction: New research
Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a condition characterized by the consistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. It can be a temporary or chronic problem and can occur at any age but is more common as men get older. Erectile dysfunction can have various underlying causes, including physical (such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, or hormonal imbalances) or psychological factors (such as stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues). Treatment options for erectile dysfunction may include lifestyle changes, medications, therapy, or in some cases, surgery.
According to the research, the risk of erectile dysfunction increases threefold with every additional 1.2 hours of computer usage.
Researchers have stated that spending too much time on the computer can lead to sexual weakness in men.
A study involving more than two hundred thousand men has revealed that the chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction increase 3.57 times with every additional 1.2 hours of computer usage.
According to findings published in the medical journal “Andrology,” strong genetic predisposition was observed among these men regarding recreational computer use.
The research indicates a decrease in the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in men due to prolonged computer use for recreation, which is essential for sperm production.
However, researchers mentioned that there is no evidence suggesting that other sedentary activities such as watching television or driving for leisure also increase the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.
They suggested further research is needed to understand the relationship between computer use and the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.
The authors of the study wrote: “Although the specific mechanism of erectile dysfunction caused by computer use has not been clearly identified in the current study, the evident damage to male potency from a sedentary lifestyle requires public attention.”
In other words, physical activity can help prevent or improve erectile dysfunction.
Chinese scientists observed the data from Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), where genes associated with specific conditions or traits, such as a sedentary lifestyle, are identified.
Professor Alan Pacey, an andrologist at the University of Manchester, expressed it to some extent clearly but in a complex study, identifying potential contributing factors that could lead to erectile dysfunction.
He said, “We have known for some time that men who have more sedentary lifestyles may be more prone to erectile dysfunction, but we do not know why.”
“Although this research does not clearly indicate the exact cause and effect, it certainly suggests that men concerned about sexual weakness may need to step away from the computer and be more active. Research has already shown that regular exercise can improve erectile dysfunction.”
They further added, “Certainly, if the issue persists, men should consult their doctors who can offer various solutions to help. ”
The group consisted of men aged 40 to 60 who were part of the UK Biobank organization, which is an online database of medical and lifestyle records of over five hundred thousand British citizens.
